Photographs of graphite on paper, 2020-2021

Dedicated to Steve Michael

I am obsessed with the active decay of an image.  Making these photographs is the only way to preserve the imagery made. Almost immediately after making them, they change. The shavings are not meant to stay in place. They are more live sculpture than drawing; they smudge, they blow, they compress. They are fragile; temporal. And then, the original is no more. In minutes it can be unrecognizable from the intent. Viewing them is to investigate my own memory. For me, the work is about my ever present connection to loss and the photographs are my lifeline to hope.
